artist statement
As an artist, the world is my inspiration. My entourage defines my art. From my ethnic background to my group of friends, the environment that I live in exudes of creativity. I like my art to be inspired by regular, everyday people which made me realise that art is an escape necessary to our mundane issues. People are riveting and the dullest events can tell the most extraordinary stories. I grew up in a big family filled with even bigger personalities which forged my perception of the world.
My art consists of written pieces, photography and music. I believe art possesses multiple levels that do not have to be explored separately. I incorporate visual art and musical themes into my works of art. Why be bound by one form of art when you can explore all of them?
I observe a lot. I observe people sitting on the metro bench. I observe people at the supermarket choosing the vegetables they will cook for supper. I observe people at coffee shops looking at the barista making their morning happiness in a cup. We live in a fast-paced society where we don’t even bother to look each other in the eye.
For my final project, I will use my two favourite mediums to try and capture the true essence of my closest friends. Their personalities are versatile in many ways, from how they dress, to how they communicate and even their preference in music. Taking a picture has become a very vulnerable habit for many of my friends and exploring this discomfort helped me present their identity onto a poster.
